The Vintage Guild – Giant Chandelier Installation

Down the Rabbit Hole

I was so proud and pleased to be asked to design a giant chandelier for Preston’s Vintage Guild weekend curated by Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway.

The installation was to be the centerpiece in the entrance of the Expo tent in Miller Park and was based on Alice in Wonderlands journey down the rabbit hole. The chandelier was designed in collaboration with Karen Smart and used the core principles of up cycling and made old and unwanted items into a stunning centrepiece. Charity shops, auction houses and car boot sales were scoured to within an inch of their lives until the perfect items were found.Brightly coloured tissue paper  pom pom’s and treasured finds took over my house for a while  until the 15m long installation was ready for the big day itself.

Granddaughter clocks, oversized Queen of Hearts cards, tea cups, chairs, teapots, top hats and numerous other items too many to list, were magically suspended over the Best in Show runway in a beautiful heart shape and was the eye catching backdrop to the Expo entrance .The installation looked like Alice’s descent down through the rabbit hole where everything was falling all around her.

The installation after a bit of a wait, went up beautifully and was one of the most stunning pieces that I had worked upon. The Vintage Guild had a fantastic fun vibe and I can’t express how chuffed I was to be a part of it. A big shout out to Elena Gifford who thought of us to do the installation in the first place, it was a pleasure. I loved every minute of it and I want to do it all over again.
